100,000 DIE EACH YEAR FROM
ADVERSE DRUG REACTIONS

The April 15m 1998 issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association reports that Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs) in hospitals may cause more than 100,000 deaths in the U.S. every year. This does not include ADR deaths outside hospitals such as those at home or in nursing homes.
The study, performed at the University of Toronto, found that 2,216,000 hospital patients experienced a serious ADR resulting in 106,000 deaths. This figure accounts for nearly 5% of all causes of recorded death in 1994. This makes Adverse Drug Reactions the fourth leading cause of death in the United States.
According to the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration, 5,212 Americans die each year from illegal drugs such as heroine and cocaine. This means that in the United States alone, properly prescribed and dispensed legal drugs kill 20 times the number of people that illegal drugs do.

ABNORMAL MUSCLE FUNCTION
ALTERS NORMAL SPINAL FUNCTION

In 1996, Issue 21 of the Journal Spine reported that abnormal function of the low-back muscles will interfere with normal spinal function. Abnormal muscle function or “Myopathology” is one of the components of the Vertebral Subluxation Complex that is so effectively dealt with in Chiropractic.
The induced abnormal muscle function in the tests had the net effect of causing the spine to be less stable. This instability of the spine resulted in a shifting of weight loads from the joints of the spine to the discs and ligaments which are not designed to handle this type of weight-bearing stress.
The authors of the study point out that “trunk muscles have been proven to play an important role in the normal functioning of the spine.” They went on to conclude that “muscle dysfunction disturbs the normal functioning of other spinal components and may cause spinal disorders”.
By way of commentary, Chiropractic helps restore and maintain the integrity and stability of your spine, allowing it to function to the best of its ability. Over and over again, research points to the fact that keeping your spine healthy is necessary for keeping your entire body, and those of your family, as healthy as possible.

ALTERNATIVE HEALTH CARE AND WHY PATIENTS USE IT

A study in the May 20, 1998 issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association finds some very interesting reasons why people are willing to go outside the standard medical sick care system and pay for these services out of their own pocket without benefit of a third party payor.
The study first asked participants to rate the three most "bothersome" or "serious" conditions they are faced with. Back pain came out on top at 19.7% followed by allergies at 16.6%, strains/sprains at 15.7%, digestive problems at 14.5% and lung problems at 13%.
The top four wellness disciplines chosen were Chiropractic at 15.7%, lifestyle and diet changes at 8%, exercises at 7.2% and relaxation techniques at 6.9%.
The study also tried to find those things that would predict which patients would be more likely to use a wellness discipline. These included being more educated, being a cultural creative, having a transformational experience that changed a person’s world view, having poorer overall health, believing in the importance of body, mind and spirit and reporting any of the following, anxiety, back problems, chronic pain or urinary tract infections.
5% of the study participants used wellness disciplines as their primary form of health care. Their reasons were because they distrusted medical doctors and hospitals, they desired control over their health, they were dissatisfied with medical care and had a strong belief in the importance of their inner life and experiences.
People who used the wellness disciplines reported that the benefits were 1) I get relief for my symptoms, the pain or discomfort is less or goes away, I feel better. 2) The treatment works better for my particular health problem than standards medicine’s. 3) The treatment promotes health rather than just focusing on illness.
Or, in other words, people having health problems who were more educated, creative and understood the importance of a healthy body, mind, and spirit were more likely to utilize wellness disciplines such as chiropractic. Sounds like a lot of smart people.

ANTIBACTERIAL SOAPS
MAY ALSO LEAD TO RESISTANT BACTERIA

We have been reporting for a long time that the nearly indiscriminate use of antibiotics is producing resistant super-strains of bacteria that do not respond to any current treatment. The April 16, 1999 issue of the Journal of Biological Chemistry reports that a common agent found in antibacterial products such as soaps may actually increase the likelihood of resistance in common household bacteria.
It has been previously thought that the chemical, called triclosan, acted as an agent that killed all bacteria on contact by rupturing the bacteria cell walls. Indeed, if that were the case, it would be very unlikely that bacteria strains would develop resistance.
As it turns out, triclosan works the same way many antibiotics do, by interfering with the production of necessary fatty acids by certain genes inside the bacteria. Unfortunately, these genes can mutate in some cases and cause the bacteria to become genetically resistant to triclosan, become harder to kill and pass along their resistance to following generations of bacteria.
Researcher Charles Rock, Ph.D., of the St. Jude Children’s Hospital says “we consider this to be a serious public health concern,” and that the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) should regulate triclosan the same way it regulates other antibacterial drugs.

ANTIBIOTICS AND TENDONITIS CAN
LEAD TO TENDON RUPTURE

Common antibiotics such as Cipro and Floxin, used for respiratory and bladder infections can produce painful tendon rupture requiring surgical repair when taken by patients who have tendonitis.
While this information is commonly known by doctors in Britain and France, it is not commonly known among U.S. physicians.
Health consumer advocate groups recently asked the FDA to warn physicians about using certain antibiotics in the presence of tendonitis.
The FDA said they will "consider the request."

FOR ARTHRITIS PATIENTS, CHIROPRACTIC MOST POPULAR,
HELPFUL WELLNESS DISCIPLINE

The September 21, 1999 issue of The Annals of Internal Medicine reports that chiropractic is the most popular and by far the most effective of the wellness disciplines (also known as CAM or Complementary and Alternative Medicine) for patients suffering from rheumatologic diseases such as arthritis and fibromyalgia.
In the study, 63% of the patients who went to a rheumatologist also took advantage of the wellness disciplines. 31% of those patients tried chiropractic care at least once.
73 of the patients who began chiropractic care found it useful. The rest of the wellness disciplines (copper bracelets, magnets, diet supplements, etc.) were found to be helpful by less than 50% of the people who tried them. 63% of the arthritis patients in this study reported that they used the Wellness Disciplines at least once and more than 90% of them were using them on a regular basis.
Interestingly enough , only 45% of the patients who tried the wellness disciplines told their rheumatologist although 71% of the doctors said that it was OK for their patients to do so.
The reasons the patients gave for incorporating the wellness disciplines into their treatment plan were: to alleviate their plan , their medication wasn’t working, they heard it helped someone else and it’s safe.
By way of commentary, it’s no surprise that arthritis patients experience such good results from chiropractic care. Chiropractic Wellness Care helps your body work the best it possibly can by removing interferences to your body’s ability to repair and maintain itself in a healthy state. Interferences to your nervous system can cause functional disorders that eventually lead to diseases such as arthritis.

BLOOD THINNERS AND TYLENOL DON'T MIX

The Journal of the American Medical Association reported in the March 4, 1998 issue that patients taking a widely used blood thinner raise the likelihood of internal bleeding if they also take acetaminophen (the active ingredient in Tylenol).
The effects of the blood-thinner warfarin, or Coumadin, are increased by the acetaminophen. According to Dr. Elaine Hylek of Massachusetts General Hospital, people who are on warfarin that take acetaminophen should be closely watched for bleeding.
Taking drugs can be dangerous, particularly drugs like warfarin whose effects are altered by many things such as other medications, certain food and illness. Chiropractic increases your body’s ability to function the best it can.

BREASTFEEDING REDUCES RISK
OF CHILDREN'S OBESITY

The July 17,1999 issue of the British Medical Journal reports that babies who have been breastfed have a lower chance of being obese in childhood than babies who have been bottle-fed.
The study of 13,000 German children just starting school found that those that were breast-fed was nearly half that of those bottle-fed; 2.8% vs. 4.5%.
The researchers also found that obesity risk declined the longer a child was breast-fed. Dr. Rudiger von Kries at Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich, Germany where the research was conducted said,
In children who had been breast fed for at least 6 months or more the risks of being overweight or obese were reduced by more than 30% and more than 40%, respectively,”
This study puts reduced risk of obesity on the long list of health benefits - including improvements in immunological function and neurological development - already attributed to breastfeeding.

NON BREAST-FED BABIES
HAVE HIGHER RISK FOR ASTHMA

A study in the September 25, 1999 issue do the British Medical Journal found that babies who were fed milk other than breast milk experienced a substantially higher risk of developing asthma.
The study involved infants who were only breastfed for the first four months of their life compared with infants who were fed non-breast milk.
The authors surmised that non-breast milk does not provide the same protective agents that are naturally found in breast milk. Non-breast milk also contains more potential allergic components that can lead to health problems such as asthma.

CHILDREN AS YOUNG AS 10 USING ANABOLIC STEROIDS

The May, 1998 issue of the journal Pediatrics reports a disturbing fact; children as young as 10 years of age are taking anabolic steroids to improve their athletic performance.
Steroid abuse in adults has proven to be extremely damaging to the body. Steroids can stunt growth, damage the liver, lead to development of unwanted sexual effects and numerous other long term health problems.
University of Massachusetts researcher Avery Faigenbaum, who is the author of the study says that someone is providing the drugs to the children. "A cycle of steroids costs a few hundred dollars. I don’t know a lot of 10-year-olds who have a couple of hundred dollars. I think we have to look at youth coaches."
Surveys taken of high school students in the past have consistently shown that steroid abuse in boys was typically twice as high as that in girls. This study of 10-year-old 5th graders indicated that steroid abuse in boys was nearly equal; 2.8% for boys and 2.6% for girls. Faigenbaum said the increased emphasis on girl’s sports may have caused the usage in girls to increase.
By the way of commentary , abusing anabolic steroids to improve athletic performance in children subjects them to developmental damage that can produce repercussions that will negatively affect them for a lifetime.
Athletes at every level of competition have realized that a properly functioning and balanced body, maintained through chiropractic care, is necessary for peak athletic performance.

CHRONIC LOW BACK PAIN IN CHILDREN

The May 15, 1997 issue of Spine reports on a study that shows nearly 1-in-5 14-16 year olds have back pain and many of them report that the pain is chronic.
18% of the 14-16 year olds reported back pain that interfered with school work or leisure activities during the previous 12 months. Of these children, 26% of the boys and 33% of the girls reported that the pain was recurrent or chronic. It should also be noted that as the children got older, the incidents of pain increased.
The authors concluded that a significant part of the low back pain children report is recurrent or chronic by the time the are 14. Chiropractors have always encouraged early detection and correction of spinal problems before they become chronic. This study shows that spinal problems do indeed start early in life and if they go uncorrected, get worse. Be sure that your children are regularly checked by your chiropractor to allow for proper spinal hygiene and a better expression of their natural health potential.

CHIROPRACTIC GOOD FOR NECK PAIN
AND SAFER THAN DRUGS

A study done in 1996 and reported in The Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics shows that Chiropractic care is not only better than NSAIDS (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs such as aspirin, ibuprofen, acetaminophen, etc.) at relieving neck pain but that it is safer as well.
The authors of the study noted that they were unable to locate any randomized, controlled tests that examined the appropriate use and effectiveness of NSAIDS by a factor of several hundred times.
NSAIDS are the typical medical treatment for these situations and work by raising the body’s threshold of pain perception. NSAIDS have been shown to cause problems ranging from gastrointestinal bleeding to kidney failure to death.
By way of commentary, the use of NSAIDS for the treatment of spinal problems leads to very serious problems in thousands of people every year. Numerous studies have shown over and over that Chiropractic is a safe and effective way to correct spinal problems, the pain they cause as well as the resulting body malfunction. Using dangerous drugs to cover up a problem that can be corrected with safe and effective Chiropractic care simply doesn’t make sense. Try Chiropractic first.?

CHIROPRACTIC REDUCES BLOOD PRESSURE

A study in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics in December, 1988 reports that patients under active chiropractic care experienced significant decreases in elevated blood pressure.
In the study, each patient was randomly assigned to one of the three groups: those receiving active chiropractic care, placebo chiropractic care or no chiropractic care.
According to the authors, results indicated that elevated “blood pressure decreased significantly in the active [chiropractic care group], whereas no significant changes occurred in the placebo and control [groups].
An October 1993 study in the same journal reports that patients under chiropractic care who are taking high blood pressure medication may experience their blood pressure dropping too far below normal.
As a result of this study, the authors advised that these patients should be monitored by their medical doctor for any downward adjustments in their medication.

COLIC AND CHIROPRACTIC: EVIDENCE MOUNTS

A research paper presented at the 1999 World Federation of Chiropractic Bi-Annual Assembly confirms previous research that children with colic respond very favorably to chiropractic care.
In August, 1989, the Journal of Manipulative & Physiological Therapeutics reported on a Danish study which found that 94% of a group of 314 children with infantile colic responded very favorably to Chiropractic care within 14 days of beginning care.
This study, performed in South Africa, found that 93% of the children studied experienced a complete resolution of colic within a two week period. The study also found that “no recurrence of the infantile colic was observed in any experimental infant in the intervening month between cessation of treatment and the follow-up telephone interview.”
Vertebral Subluxations interfere with the ability of a child’s body to heal, repair and keep itself healthy. Correcting Vertebral Subluxations will allow their body to fully express its inborn healing ability and in many cases, correct health problems on its own.

JUVENILE DIABETES: CAUSED BY VACCINATION?

The February, 1998 issue of The Vaccine Reaction, published by the National Vaccine Information Center reports that there is new evidence that Juvenile Diabetes can be caused by standard childhood vaccinations.
Researchers as far back as 1949 reported that some children injected with the pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine had trouble maintaining normal blood glucose levels. Research in the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s indicated that viral infections may contribute to causing diabetes. The introduction of live virus vaccines has raised questions about whether the vaccines themselves could be helping cause the 600% increase in Juvenile Diabetes over the last 40 years.
In the October 22, 1997 issue of Infectious Diseases in Clinical Practice, J. Barthelow Classen, M.D. reports that the occurrence of diabetes in Finland was stable in children under the age of 4. In 1976, the pertussis vaccine used in Finland was made stronger by adding a second strain of bacteria. During the period from 1977 to 1979, "there was a 64 percent increase in the incidence of Type I diabetes in Finland compared to the years 1970-1976."
Additional vaccines were added in 1982. According to Dr. Classen, "the net effect was the addition of three new vaccines to the 0-4-year-old age group and a 147% increase in the incidence of IDDM (insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus), the addition of one new vaccine to the 5-9-year-olds and a rise in the incidence of diabetes of 40%." The rise in IDDM in the different age groups correlated with the number of vaccines given.
For more information on the dangers of vaccination, the National Vaccine Information Center can be reached at 512 Maple Avenue, #206, Vienna, VA 22180. Their phone number is 1-800-909-SHOT (7468).

DIARRHEA VACCINE PULLED OFF MARKET

The Associated Press reported on October 15, 1999 that The Wyeth Lederle Vaccines division of American Home Products, the maker of RotaShield, the diarrhea vaccine, has pulled the controversial vaccine off the market and concerns that it causes bowel obstruction in infants.
In July of this year, the government advised doctors to stop giving the vaccine to infants after more than 20 babies developed problems with a bowel obstruction known as intussusception. Intussusception occurs when a portion of the bowel folds into itself and causes an obstruction. Intussusception is corrected surgically and has a high mortality rate if not dealt with within a 24 hour period. Since July, reports of similar obstructions have since reached about 100, prompting the company to withdraw the vaccine from the market.
The company has requested that any doctors who have any remaining vaccine in their offices should immediately return it to the company.
This isn’t the first time American Home Products has produced drugs that cause damage. They recently settled claims worth $4.83 billion over their half of the fen-phen diet drug that caused heart problems. They produced the contraceptive Norplant and recently settled a multimillion dollar court case brought by 36,000 women who took the drug. Last year the government banned their painkiller Duract after finding it caused fatal liver damage.

DOCTORS AND LAWYERS HAVE FEWER SURGERIES

The May 10, 1997 issue of the British Medical Journal reports that doctors, lawyers, and their families have significantly fewer surgeries than the rest of the population.
Patients in the general population were 50% more likely to have a tonsillectomy, hysterectomy or hernia repair and 80% more likely to have their gall bladders or hemorrhoids removed than the doctor or lawyer groups studied.
The article suggested that the rates for doctors and lawyers was lower because both groups were the most informed about the benefits and risks of medicine and surgery. They were also better informed about the alternatives. Could there be a lesson there?

DOCTORS TAKE VITAMINES,
DON'T RECOMMEND THEM

A 1997 article in The American Journal of Cardiology reports that cardiologists take vitamins but don’t necessarily recommend them to their patients.
44% of American cardiologists said they take antioxidant vitamins (E, C and beta carotene) because they know that these vitamins can help prevent heart disease. Only 37% of the doctors surveyed recommend that their patients take the vitamins for the same reason, prevention.
By way of commentary; shame on them. We trust that our doctors will give us good advice, all of the advice that they would want to know and use themselves. Ask your Chiropractor how often their own spines get checked.

FDA DRUG OVERSIGHT LACKING

The May 20, 1998 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association contains a very well-referenced commentary that points out some startling statistics on the oversight of drugs and adverse drug reactions in the United States.
According to the commentary, "51% of approved drugs have serious adverse effects not detected prior to approval." The authors pointed out that simply knowing about these adverse effects is not enough protection. 1.5 million people every year are injured by prescription drugs to the point of requiring hospitalization and 100,000 of those die. What is needed, they say, is a "more active and effective safety program for marketed drugs [in order] to protect the public health."
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) currently has about 1400 employees on staff to approve new drugs. A full-time staff ofonly 52 people in the Division of Pharmacovigilance and Epidemiology (DPE) are responsible for monitoring the safety of more than 5,000 brand name, generic and over-the-counter drugs already on the market. Only 9 of the 52 staff members have related professional degrees.
The FDA’s MedWatch Office is responsible for getting doctors to report adverse drug reactions and product defects to the FDA. They are responsible not only for prescription and over-the-counter drugs but medical devices, biological products and special nutritional products. The MedWatch Office only has 4 employees. As a result, the FDA estimates that only about 1% of adverse drug reactions are ever reported.
The FDA plans to reorganize the unit in 1998; new computers and software, the staff may increase to 65 people and the DPE will be given a new name.

GRAPE JUICE BETTER THAN ASPIRIN FOR HEART

A study presented at the American College of Cardiology’s 47th Scientific Session in Atlanta, Georgia in March, 1998 found that purple grape juice did a much better job than aspirin at reducing the tendency for blood clots to form.
John Folts, Ph.D., of the University of Wisconsin reported, "Our study found that when our 10 subjects drank approximately two cups of purple grape juice a day for a week, the stickiness of the platelets in their blood was reduced significantly…stronger than a published standard for aspirin." Too much platelet stickiness leads to increased clot formation and has been shown to be a factor in heart attacks and stroke.
Also studied were grapefruit and orange juice, which produced no significant effects.
This research is important because of the dangers involved when taking aspirin. It has been shown that Aspirin and related drugs are involved in intestinal bleeding, increased incidence of stroke and 10% of end-stage kidney failures.
"We are investigating whether purple grape juice may offer an attractive alternative to aspirin," Dr. Folts said.

IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME
CONNECTED TO NERVE SYSTEM

In the April 29, 1998 Today’s News Minute from Johns Hopkins it was reported that Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is connected to problems of the nervous system.
IBS, which involves severe cramping, uncontrollable gas and bowel rumbles, mainly affects adults in their 20’s and 30’s and affects more women than men.
According to Dr. Marvin Shuster, head of the Division of Digestive Diseases at Johns Hopkins, It looks like the key is going to be at least in the interactions between nerves and muscles, nerves of the brain and nerves intrinsic to the gut, inside the gut.
By the way of commentary, the spinal cord and spinal nerves are the pathways between the nerves and muscles and the nerves of the brain and the nerves of the gut that Dr. Shuster talks about in the article. Chiropractic Wellness Care removes interferences to these nerve pathways. Making sure the body is free of nerve interference with Chiropractic Wellness Care will help you and your family maintain a higher degree of function, health and wellness for a lifetime.

LOW BACK PAIN RESPONDS BETTER TO CHIROPRACTIC CARE

The May 1, 1998 issue of the British Medical Journal reports that three-quarters of the people who go to see their medical doctor with a new episode of lower back pain are still suffering symptoms a year later. Interestingly enough, the same journal in August, 1995 reported on a follow-up study that found patients under Chiropractic care had 29% more improvement than those treated in hospitals after three years.
The 1998 study discovered that most of the people with lower back problems stop consulting their medical doctor after three months but continue to experience pain and related disability one year later.
In the 1995 Chiropractic study the researchers reported that three years after care began, those patients with low back pain who were under chiropractic care got more benefit and long-term satisfaction than those who were treated by hospitals.
It is clear that restoring the normal mechanics, alignment and functional stability of the spinal column through Chiropractic care results in a body that not only feels better, but also one that functions better, is able to repair itself and maintain a higher degree of health.

MATERNAL SMOKING INCREASES CHANCE OF SIDS

A literature review reported in the November 1997 journal Thorax recently completed that investigated the risk of SIDS from before-birth and after-birth exposure to paternal smoking.
The literature indicates that mothers who smoke during pregnancy triple the risk of their babies dying from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Those parents waiting to smoke until after the baby is born didn’t do much better. Babies exposed to second-hand smoke after birth more than doubled their risk.

MOST PEOPLE ARE UNAWARE OF NSAID DANGERS

According to Reuters Health news service on May 26, 1998, Dr. Jay Goldstein of the University of Illinois at Chicago reports that most Americans are unaware of the dangers of the class of drugs known as NSAIDS or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin, ibuprofen and acetaminophen. Dr. Goldstein made his presentation to attendees at the 1998 Digestive Disease Week conference in New Orleans, Louisiana.
About 57% of Americans surveyed who use NSAIDS underestimated their risks of developing ulcers, bleeding and other complications of the stomach and intestines.
8% of those surveyed were defined as heavy users- those who use NSAIDS for five consecutive days on more than 10 occasions in a 2-year period. Only 19% of these individuals are aware that they are at a moderate risk of developing gastrointestinal problems.
33 million people in the United States routinely use NSAIDs. An astounding 75% of them (24,750.00) are unaware or unconcerned about dangerous side effects. Our research shows that Americans at moderate to high risk of gastrointestinal complications continue to misuse NSAIDs, says Dr. Goldstein.
By way of commentary, this publication has previously reported that more than 100,000 people every year die from adverse reactions to properly prescribed and utilized prescription medications. Many adverse drug reactions and deaths could be prevented if patients are properly warned or, better yet, take the responsibility themselves to find out about the dangerous side effects of any medications they decide to take, prescribed or over-the-counter.

PAIN MEDICATION CAN CAUSE CHRONIC HEADACHES

The March, 1998 issue of the Western Journal of Medicine tells us that many people who suffer from chronic headaches can find their relief if they quit taking daily headache medicine.
This phenomena is known as rebound headaches, which are caused by the daily use of headache medication. Over time, taking daily pain medication can result in drug resistant headaches.
The author of the article, Dr. Morris Maizels, found that of patients who experienced a significant reduction of symptoms just by cutting out their daily use of pain pills.
Dr. Maizels says that as little as three aspirin on a daily basis can cause rebound headaches, which can resemble migraines. Once they stop taking pain medication daily, he says, they may feel worse for about two weeks before improvement begins. He added that most people can stop immediately but some may require a gradual reduction process. s

PMS PATIENTS HAVE MORE SPINAL PROBLEMS

The May, 1999 issue of the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics reports that women who suffer from PMS are more likely to have spinal problems.
The study involved 84 women, 54 who had been diagnosed with PMS and 30 without PMS. The goal was designed to determine whether or not chiropractic may help ease PMS symptoms.
A thorough chiropractic exam on both groups revealed that the PMS group was more likely to experience spinal problems such as spinal tenderness and disability and muscle weakness. So much so, that the researchers concluded that the correction of the spinal problems by a chiropractor may well be an effective way to relieve the symptoms of PMS.
This study focuses on the concept that the chiropractic correction of spinal problems allows your body a better chance to correct organ and system malfunction. Proper organ and system function allows your body to regain and maintain its health on every level. Regular care by your chiropractor will help make sure that your body stays as healthy as possible, functioning the best it can.

REMOVING TONSELS
DOESN'T HELP EAR INFECTIONS

A report in the September 8, 1999 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association finds that removing children’s tonsils and adenoids does not help recurrent ear infections.
Two 14-year clinical studies conducted by the researchers found that removing the adenoids alone or the tonsils and adenoids together had any long-lasting effect. In fact, they concluded that due to the complication rate from the two surgeries, "neither operation ordinarily should be considered as an initial intervention in such children."
